OIL SPILL CONTAINMENT SYSTEMS
A wide variety of devices have been designed to prevent the spread of oil slicks over wide areas. An attempt was made to include a description of all of the various types of barriers currently in the published literature, under patent application, in the final stages of development, and those available as full scale commercial equipment today. Performance data, when documented by reliable and competent personnel, are also included. The containment systems listed may be broadly generalized into the following types; commercial floating booms, improvised booms, and air barriers. More than 50 approaches to the problem are encompassed in the report, although many more systems are possible. (Author)
