NEW MCM SYSTEM FROM AUSTRALIA

This article describes a mine countermeasures system developed in Australia. The concept centres on the employment of craft of opportunity (COOP) such as fishing vessels, manned by reservisits, to tow specially developed minesweeping equipment. A central feature of the project is a new type of influence sweep based on a permanent magnet (DYAD) coupled to a pipe noisemaker. Because the sweep does not require electrical power generated from the towing craft, it can be towed by any COOP.
