ON THE EFFECT OF TUGBOAT ASSISTANCE IN HARBOUR I

Tugboat assistance is very important for a ship manoeuvring in a harbour but few studies on this operation have been carried out. When using tugboats, the operation must fully understand the characteristics of the turning motion. The characteristics of the turning motion under tugboat assistance is discussed, using the time and area required in turning motion. The following results were obtained: (1) If the ratio of thrust of fore and after tugboats is constant, increment of thrust makes no change to the area required in turning. (2) Adjustment of thrust of fore and after tugboats reduce the area required in turning. (3) It is important to control the initial speed in turning. Because the area required in turning increases in proportion to the initial speed. (4) The use of the main engine and rudder reduce the area required in turning.
