SOIL MOVEMENTS CAUSED BY PILE DRIVING IN CLAY
These study which investigated the displacement of the soil (clays) in and around pile groups caused by pile driving and developed a method for prediction of field performance, directed special attention to the correlation between theoretical solutions and field performance. Field case studies show that pile driving in clay can reduce significantly the shear strength of the soil around the piles, cause large lateral displacements and generate high pore water pressures. It was also found that pile driving in most soft, normally consolidated clays will cause fracturing of the soil in the local plastic zone around the pile due to the decrease of the effective tangential stress during the driving. Findings are also recorded which relate to the influence of soil compressibility and of strain softening, and the partial remoulding of clays. Details are given of the finite element method to investigate the lateral soil displacements in clay caused by pile driving, and methods to measure field pore pressures, total stresses and the coefficient of lateral pressure, and surface displacements.
