THE HELLENIC NAVY'S HYDRA CLASS FRIGATES
The Hellenic Navy signed a contract with Hamburg Shipbuilders Blohm + Voss in February 1989 to build four frigates to the MEKO 200 HN design. The first of the class HS HYDRA was launched in June 1991. Her sister SPETSAI is expected to be delivered in July 1995, and will be followed by the PSARA in May 1996 and the SALAMIS in November the same year. In general the Hellenic Navy ships follow the standard MEKO 200 layout, the major external difference is a spray-deflecting bulwark on the forecastle. The weapons fit is similar to the Australian and New Zealand Anzac class. Principal particulars of the Hydra class frigates are given.
