LARGE-DIAMETER SUBMARINE PIPELINES FOR TANKER TERMINALS
Submarine pipelines 48 in. in diam have already been installed and larger lines are planned. This paper discusses planning, design, and construction of such large-diameter submarine tanker-loading lines. Geologic, oceanographic, and meteorologic conditions are described, and the importance of environmental conditions is further emphasized in a discussion of submarine pipeline design. Described in detail is construction by the bottom pull method, which appears to be the most likely method for making future installations of large-diameter lines. The paper concludes that increasing size will be accompanied by increases in magnitude of problems and in economic and environmental risks.
