FOURTH GENERATION SDZS FROM HDW
Efforts by national bodies in the past 15 years to sponsor co-operation by domestic industry in developing more efficient ships have been spurred largely by rising manning costs. The most successful of these initiatives has been Germany's 'Ship of the Future' (Schiff der Zunkunft - SdZ) project, initiated at the end of 1979. Rather than set out to reduce crew numbers the first aim was to reduce the workload on board. The Norasia shipmanagement concern and its shipowning partners Peter Dohle and F. Laeisz ordered the first ships embracing most of the SdZ principles. The Norasia SdZ fleet now numbers 10 ships, in three types and capabilities. A profile drawing of the fourth generation SdZs and principal particulars of NORASIA KIEL are given.
