DEVELOPMENT OF WORLD'S FIRST SUPERCONDUCTING ELECTRO MAGNETO-HYDRODYNAMIC PROPULSION SHIP, YAMATO 1

Over the past century, screw propellers have been used and considered the best thruster. Recently, research and development has been carried out on a superconducting magneto-hydrodynamic propulsion system with a superior vibration and cavitation performance to screw propellers in the high speed range. In June 1992, sea trials were carried out on YAMAMOTO 1, the world's first prototype experimental ship with superconducting magneto-hydrodynamic propulsion. The configuration of YAMAMOTO 1 is described in this paper.
