HYDRODYNAMIC FORCES ACTING ON A HIGH-SPEED CRAFT RUNNING WITH CONSTANT SPEED
Hydrodynamic forces (drag, lift and trim moment) acting on scale models of high-speed semi-planing craft were measured to determine their characteristics. Nine model whose hull shapes systematically varied were chosen, and their trim and sinkage systematically changed in the test. The models were fixed to a towing carriage by a three-component load cell to measure the hydrodynamic forces. It was found that the residual resistance was proportional to the square of the displacement and was not so sensitive to the hull form, trim angle or sinkage. It was also found that the lift force acting on a hard-chine craft is almost proportional to the square of the beam of the model at high speed and is not so sensitive to the hull form. Finally, the characteristics of the trim moment at high speed were investigated.
