ODENSE-LINDO EXPERIENCE WITH MODEL/FULL SCALE CORRELATION ON A SERIES OF PANMAX CONTAINERSHIPS

This paper describes in brief the experiences with the MAERSK LINE M-Class Panamax container ships as to speed, vibrations and manoeuvrability in comparison with model test and calculation predictions. As the prediction of propeller induced pressure impulses and vibrations were the major themes during the lines development, the model test and vibration investigation programmes during the design stage are described. During the sea-trials of the first vessel in the series, heavy vibration occurred in the deckhouse. The propeller was initially thought to be the cause. The main engine, however, was soon identified as being the origin and after modification of the axial damper the problem was overcome.
