BAYESIAN UPDATING OF SETTLEMENT PREDICTION
Bayes' theorem provides an ideal framework for updating the geotechnical design predictions on the basis of field observations. The Bayesian approach allows to combine in a systematic way subjective judgement, which is necessary in design, with observational data. A Bayesian approach was developed for updating the prediction of consolidation settlement based on settlement and pore pressure measurements. The method consists of three steps: 1) prior probability analysis, 2) determination of likelihood functions, and 3) posterior probability analysis. The approach and example calculations for the settlement calculation of gravity base structure in the North Sea are presented in this paper.
