ILLINOIS MOTORCYCLE HELMET USE SURVEY: SUMMARY OF FINDINGS

The study reviews the voluntary use of helmets by motorcyclists who were riding on Illinois streets and highways during August 1975. Statewide, 36.8% of the riders (including passengers) wore helmets. There were significant variations in the rate, related to: sex of the motorcyclist, type of trafficway, weather, size of city, time of day and day of week. The largest variation in helmet usage occurred on differing types of trafficway, from 31.5% of the motorcyclists wearing helmets while riding on city streets to 77.5% of riders wearing helmets while traveling on rural interstate highways. The frequency of helmet usage also was influenced by the size of city in which the riding took place, ranging from high usage in rural areas to very low usage in Chicago. Data presented in the report represent 53,000 observations collected during 4300 observations were made starting August 4, 1975 and continued through August 31.
