VEHICLE OPERATING COST MODEL USER'S GUIDE. SPECIAL REPORT

This report is a user's guide to the Forest Service Vehicle Operating Cost Model. While it provides some background information on the Model, it is primarily a description of the input data necessary to run the Model and of the proper method of entering the data. The Model has been developed to serve planning and design needs related to low standard roads in National Forest. Its intended uses include estimation of logging truck running costs for timber appraisal, as a more accurate alternative to the Logging Road Handbook (3), and analysis of roading alternatives to achieve balanced design. Careful attention is paid to vehicle acceleration and deceleration behavior, instantaneous energy balances and fuel consumption. A novel factor in the Model is the use of a tire wear estimation methodology based on slip at the tire road interface. For an in-depth discussion of the theories and motivations that have produced the Model, the user is encouraged to read the papers by Tangeman (8) and by Della-Moretta and Sullivan (5).
