THE U.S. COAST GUARD MARINE TRANSPORTATION GUIDANCE AND CONTROL SYSTEM

A brief historical summary of aids to navigation is presented as background to the development of electronic aids. A description of the development of Loran-C as an electronic aid and the current effort to expand the coverage to meet the users needs. Also presented is a description of the state of art of vessel traffic systems and the operation of these systems. The authors also pose the question whether the use of guidance and control system for collision avoidance might not be a better approach than designing to survive a collision.
