THE CENTRALIZED ENGINEROOM AUTOMATION FOR THE SAN DIEGO CLASS TANKER

The Centralized Engineroom Automation System for the San Diego Class Tanker required a substantial amount of interfacing effort in order to incorporate the client's established operating standards and control philosophies within those normal to U.S. Flag common practices and those imposed by regulatory body requirements. The overall theme of this presentation is to highlight the resulting centralized control system. The paper introduces the control room and the main console arrangement. It further emphasizes some of the specific layout features such as the "All-Dark" concept, the "VAR-"-Panel and the mimics with integrated operating switches. Only those control functions and system philosophies not formerly seen aboard U.S. Flag vessels are described in this paper. Another section of the paper is devoted to some of the techniques utilized to reduce installation costs. Finally, a description is included concerning the pre-installation checkout routines designed to minimize on-board activities.
