NONLINEAR SHIP ROLLING: IDENTIFICATION OF DAMPING MODEL
A critical analysis was carried out to obtain a correct formulation of a roll damping model and an efficient evaluation of the model coefficients. Results showed that numerical hydrodynamics does not satisfactorily forecast valid results for large amplitude motion; experiments are more reliable but their analysis also presents shortcomings that make it difficult to ultimately decide the damping model. Suggestions are given for a more rational parameter estimation.
