UNCERTAINTIES IN ESTIMATING SECOND-ORDER LOW-FREQUENCY WAVE FORCES AND RESPONSES

Second-order wave loads can cause low-frequency motions of a floating platform or vessel at an exposed offshore location. These forces and motions can be estimated numerically or from model tests in a wave basin, but there are many possible sources of uncertainty and inaccuracy whichever model is used. Both types of model involve simplifying assumptions. The consequences of these assumptions are not easy to assess, because the controlling physical processes are complex, leading to uncertainties in interpreting and correlating results from computer predictions and measurements. This paper reviews some of the main sources of uncertainty, and concludes with illustrative results from a recent correlation study on a semi-submersible vessel operating in the North Sea.
