RESPONSIBILITIES PERTAINING TO DRAWING APPROVALS DURING SHIP CONSTRUCTION AND MODIFICATION
This paper discusses the obligations and responsibilities of the shipowner and the shipyard pertaining to the approval of drawings during ship construction or modification, and the resolution of disputes that frequently arise as the result of misinterpretation of or ambiguity in contract language. The reasons for transmittal of drawings between the builder and contractor (shipowner) are reviewed, and sample statements from standard contracts in the United States, Europe, and Japan are compared. The author fashions a typical conflict between principals which exposes the confusion produced by ambiguous definitions in contract language.
