AN EVALUATION OF TWO GROUP INTERVIEW AND TWO LETTER-CONTACT DRIVER IMPROVEMENT PROGRAMS
Five treatment conditions were administered to a randomly selected group of drivers who had recently accumulated citation and/or accident entries on their driving records sufficient in number and severity to meet the established selection criteria for admittance to the Driver Improvement Divisions First-Group Interview program. The effectiveness of the treatment was assessed by testing for the statistical significance of group differences. The analysis of driver performance records showed that (a) none of the treatment programs reduced the citations or accidents below that shown by the control group; (b) none of treatments lengthened the time between treatment and first post-treatment citation beyond that shown by the control group; (c) although the five driver groups received less citations in the year following than the year before treatment, the citation reduction was not appreciably more than that of the control group; and (d) two driver groups which attended the group interview programs and the no-contact control group showed reductions in their accident frequencies; however, neither interviewed group was found to have substantially different rates of change than that of the control group.
