A GENERIC REPORT ON THE MASSACHUSETTS INTERSTATE SAFETY PROGRAM

Information is presented which describes the environmental effects of those activities necessary for upgrading and improving safety along existing Massachusetts Interstate roadways. These activities include excavation and grading needed to provide clear recovery zones for out of control vehicles. Steep slopes falling away from the roadway and fixed features such as rock, posts, and guardrails require change to grant drivers the privilege of travelling on a safer highway system. The types of safety improvements under consideration, the proposed timetable, methods of construction and laws governing activity are covered. The environment (physical features, water, plant, animal life, senic qualities, air quality, noise, etc.) is described, and alternatives to the proposed activity are suggested. The discussion of the probable impact of the proposed activity and its alternatives on the environment covers such aspects as accident rates and accident costs.
