FUELS AND FUEL ADDITIVES FOR HIGHWAY VEHICLES AND THEIR COMBUSTION PRODUCTS
The usefulness of existing protocols for experimental prediction of the hazards of automotive fuels, fuel additives and their combustion products was evaluated and the conclusions reached in the study are presented. The study was designed to cover 3 principal areas: the evaluation and recommendation of test protocols for necessary toxicologic investigations; the collection of information on the composition of fuels, fuel additives and their combustion products; and the development of a classification scheme for the substances involved, based on their known toxicity and potential as a health hazard. The factors which must be considered in developing protocols are detailed, the chemical analysis of exhaust emission is discussed, and approaches are recommended for evaluating fuels and fuel additives. Proposed animal procedures for evaluating the safety of fuels and fuel additives used in internal combustion engines are outlined. Criteria for evaluating health hazards are discussed, and data collection, storage and retrieval systems are described. Recommendations for future research are suggested.
