OFFSHORE PLATFORMS, INSHORE REEFS - UPDATE ON UK RESEARCH ON THE USE OF DECOMMISSIONED PLATFORMS AS ARTIFICIAL REEFS

Recent studies have provided information on the activity, growth and condition of fish species found in the vicinity of oil platforms, which give indications of the likely effects of artificial reefs made from platform components. General experience of reef building in Japan, and particular experience in building reefs from oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico, suggests that decommissioned platforms would make useful reefs. The paper highlights the lack of specific information on the interest in creating UK in-shore reefs from materials from decommissioning of platforms. Further research is suggested by the author, to ensure that reef technology is an effective tool with respect to general fisheries management and that satisfactory arrangements can be agreed with operators on finance and liability.
