AUSTAL SHIPS DELIVERS FIRST FAST FERRY
The first fast ferry completed by Austal Ships in W. Australia, TONG ZHOU, left Fremantle for the People's Republic of China on board a heavy lift ship in October 1990. Ordered by the Nantong High Speed Passenger Ship Company , the 36m aluminium catamaran is to enter service between Nantong, a city of 1.25 million people who has no rail or air links, and Shanghai, a 70 nautical mile route. Tong Zhou is equipped with 310 seats and is described as a "commuter vessel", designed and built to fairly strict criteria as far as speed, fuel consumption and noise levels are concerned. It had to be a very efficient vessel, carrying a large payload, and be able to load and unload passengers with a minimum turnround time. General-arrangement drawings are given. Principal particulars are: propulsion 2 x MTU 16V 396 TE74 diesel engines length overall 36.00 m draught 1.30 m depth moulded 3.60 m passengers 430 crew 14 speed 30 knots
