THE NEED OF RATIONAL CRITERIA FOR FIRE SAFE DESIGN OF OFFSHORE STRUCTURES
The paper outlines the present European situation regarding the criteria and the applicable rules for the design of offshore fire protection, and provides an analysis of the benefits which can be obtained from the study of new reliability based design criteria. The goals of a project aimed at defining a proposal for European guidelines are set out, reviewing the themes and concepts which most urgently need to be finalised and harmonised for an effective and reliable fire protection design of the topsides of the offshore platforms.
