FRAMEWORKS FOR SHORELINE MANAGEMENT
A worldwide tendency towards erosion has been noted. This situation is likely to be worsened by global warming and many shorelines throughout are prone to flooding or subject to erosion. Measures to combat these effects have changed fundamentally in recent years. This has resulted in new types of structure, in particular the replacement of the traditional "hard" approach, using sea walls and groyne systems, by a soft approach based on techniques of beach nourishment and subsequent management. These new techniques demand a deeper understanding of coastal processes. Several projects in the United Kingdom are used as illustrations.
