FRACTURE BEHAVIOUR OF WELDED JOINTS WITH HAZ UNDERMATCHING

In a previous report it was shown that the fracture behaviour and overall deformation of welded joints depend upon whether stress concentrators are present or not. Overmatching in welded joints may be effective for the overall deformation of a flat wide plate specimen having a crack in a transversely welded joint. However, the fracture toughness of a welded joint is more essential in the stress concentrated region than welding overmatching, whose effects decrease as the concentration of plastic deformation increases. Three kinds of steel typically used in offshore structures were used for verification in the present study. Findings are given.
