N.C. PORTS - REPORT OF IMPACT OF THE NORTH CAROLINA PORTS ON THE STATE ECONOMY (EXECUTIVE SUMMARY)

This report documents the important impact of North Carolina's two deep-water Ports on the economy of the State. The Ports' significance is presented as effects on employment, income, industrial development and other economic factors. The report results from a study of the two Ports, Morehead City and Wilmington, that was accomplished for the North Carolina Department of Transportation and Highway Safety by the Research Triangle Institute. The objectives of the study were; (1) To increase knowledge about the significance of the State Ports to the rest of the State's economy; (2) To provide information about future opportunities for the Ports to promote the economy; (3) To improve the probabilities of making sound decisions about investments at the Ports. Stimulation and promotion of economic development was considered throughout the study to be the ultimate goal of the State Ports. Consequently, the impact measures were derived from this goal.
