NUMERICAL SOLUTION OF SOME SOLITARY-WAVE AND SUBMERGED-OBSTACLE INTERACTION PROBLEMS
A numerical technique based on a boundary element method was developed to determine the nonlinear interaction between solitary waves and several submerged obstacles in two dimensions. The problems were solved numerically and include the diffraction of solitary waves passing over a submerged pipe and a semi-buried pipe on the sea floor, both being fixed. The wave forces were also calculated. In the numerical calculations potential theory was used, with nonlinear boundary conditions and initial conditions. Time marching is achieved by Crank-Nicolson type implicit difference scheme for unconditional numerical stability. Simultaneous equations resulting from the boundary element discretisation is thus solved iteratively at each time step. The method devised is checked by solving the linear wave propagation over submerged two-dimensional cylinders for which semi-closed form solutions exists. Numerical results obtained are compared with the available experimental data for wave diffraction and forces in several of the problems discussed.
