TRAVEL TO THE 1980 WINTER OLYMPICS IN LAKE PLACID, NEW YORK: A PRELIMINARY ANALYSIS
This study provides a preliminary estimate of person trips by mode and origin (New York counties, Canada, and other States) to the 1980 winter olympics in Lake Placid, New York. A gravity model is used to allocate trip volumes with the resulting model forecasts factored up to produce an estimated volume of 30,000 trips to the primary area (Lake Placid - Sarana Lake - Wilmington). Using the projected volumes by area, a modal split analysis is made by making appropriate assumptions based on historical data. Several scenarios are outlined, each based on slightly different assumptions about route selection or potential rail service. It is assumed that travelers who use bus or rail will generally transfer to buses in order to enter the primary area. Under this assumption a likely scenario implies that approximately 5,700 autos and 35o buses will carry travelers to the primary area on a typical olympics day. /Author/
