REPAIRS TO A WHARF STRUCTURE SUBJECT TO SPALLING DAMAGE

The Barney Point Wharf was constructed in 1968. The wharf was constructed with steel cased, concrete filled piles supporting cast in situ reinforced concrete head-stocks. BHP Engineering has been involved in monitoring deterioration of concrete on the wharf since 1982. As a result of early surveys and investigations patch repairs to spalled areas on reinforced concrete headstocks were carried out in 1985 and 1987. During the course of these repairs, severe spalling was observed on some of the headstocks. A trial was carried out prior to finalising the repair procedure. Tenders were called for repairs to a number of the headstocks and construction work on on site is now in progress. The paper describes the recent investigations and repairs.
