DETECTORS USED ON MAJOR ROADS

The object of this project was the specification, development and testing of detectors which measure vehicle density and queue lengths with a high degree of reliability and accuracy, and tests on the location of these detectors. Detectors used on major roads must have a fast response so that the signals can be processed in real time and used for controlling traffic lights. The main technical requirement for these detectors is that they should produce an analog signal proportional to vehicle density, and that they should have a high degree of sensitivity. The detectors can work on 3 frequencies, and are provided with digital filters to prevent interference by adjacent detectors. The results show that the detectors satisfy requirements; there is some over-representation but this can be eliminated by using special analog/digital converters.
