LOCALISATION OF GOODS TERMINALS

LOKALISERING AV GODSTERMINALER

The object was to elucidate the factors governing the location of new goods terminals, to discuss their significance for the interested parties, and to examine possible alternatives for future development on the basis of conditions in Stockholm county. The basic premise was that a goods transport system is shaped by society, the customers (incl. The private individual) and the haulage companies. An increase in the volume of goods handled at terminals is likely, and more terminals are needed. Terminal location depends on (1) communications; (2) availability and cost of land; (3) the market situation; (4) first, running and distribution costs. The customer demands that haulage firms should be (1) cheap; (2) quick; (3) punctual; (4) careful. Rationalisation measures and new services will not suffice in future to meet these demands, and distribution and collection traffic will have to be coordinated, etc. Terminals should be sited near railways so that these can be used for long-distance traffic. Municipalities can control terminal location by physical planning, land policy measures and traffic planning, and the state can control vehicle sizes and types by legislation and subsidies. Efficiency would be enhanced by a centralised goods control system and by jointly owned terminals. Conditions in Stockholm County are examined. /TRRL/
