EFFECTS OF TWO YEARS WEATHERING ON HIGH STRENGTH FRICTION GRIP BOLTED JOINTS
This report gives the results obtained over the first two years of a ten year study of the effects of weathering on the performance of high strength friction grip bolted joints. Specimen joints, having different surface treatments applied to the plies, have been exposed to an aggressive environment for periods of up to two years. After exposure they have been tested to determine changes to the slip factor and load-slip relationship resulting from corrosion of the joint interfaces. It was found that there was a general improvement in slip factor after exposure, but slip, once initiated, developed more rapidly in weathered joints. The condition of the joint interfaces and bolts, after exposure, is described and details are given of the variation in bolt tension during the exposure period.(a) /TRRL/
