ENERGY AND THE ENVIRONMENT - ROAD TRANSPORT
Transportation takes some 20% of the energy contained in the United Kingdom, over three quarters of which is used by road transport. The ways in which cars consume energy are considered. The author suggests that development work should concentrate on lighter cars with much better drag characteristics and longer life. Effort should also be devoted to the design of more efficient engines, of which the stratified charge type is the most promising, and the reduction of maintenance costs. It is suggested that these measures could reduce overall energy consumption by road transport by 20 per cent, representing an annual saving of at least 200 million pounds in Britain alone. /TRRL/
