HYDRODYNAMIC DESIGN PROCESS OF A TUG AND BARGE SYSTEM FOR THE TRANSPORT OF THE ARIANE 5 SPACE ROCKET
One of the alternatives for the transport of the ARIANE 5 space rocket oversea from Europe to French Guyana has been investigated by Damen Shipyard and the Maritime Research Institute Netherlands (MARIN). For this purpose, a tug and Barge system was designed to transport the equipment over the very shallow surf zone for the last 20 miles of the route between the Iles du Salut and the harbour of Kourou. The sea conditions are such that high breaking waves may occur and wind and current conditions may lead to steering problems. It was essential to avoid any shock loads to the cargo so that ground contact was unacceptable. The paper gives a description of the design process, i.e. the decision making, the schematisation in the approach of the complex series of operations and of the methods applied to obtain the requested answers.
