AN EFFICIENT SURFACE PANEL METHOD FOR THE CALCULATION OF ADDED MASS MATRICES FOR DISCRETISED STRUCTURES
The prediction of the dynamic structural response of submerged marine structures necessarily includes the effect of the fluid on the structure. In the general case, the fluid/structure interaction leads to a complex coupled boundary value problem which is often of infinite extent. If our interest is confined to the low frequency elastic response of the structure, the interaction can often be reduces to frequency independent added mass and damping terms in the structural dynamic equilibrium equations. This paper discusses an efficient surface panel method for the calculation of the fluid mass matrices using only the fluid/structure interface geometry. In conjunction with a general purpose finite element analysis system, the method has proven very effective for the prediction of dynamic structural response.
