SELECTION OF CORROSION RESISTANT ALLOY TUBULARS FOR OFFSHORE APPLICATIONS
High-Alloy stainless steels and nickel-based alloys offer great potential in revolutionising well completion design by increasing allowable stress levels, removing corrosion inhibitor systems and facilitating operations impossible using conventional technology. Substantial savings in weight and space for deck equipment can also be made. The role of corrosion resistant alloys (CRA) for deep gas wells has become well-established. Better understanding of the corrosive behaviour of hydrogen sulphide/carbon dioxide/brine environments at high pressure and temperature, and of the performance limitations of some constructional materials has improved operation and equipment reliability. Guidelines for alloy selection and case histories are given.
