CELESTIAL NAVIGATION

Fifteen separate chapters cover all phases of day to day celestial navigation aboard ship. The topics covered are (1) time and the chronometer, (2) sextant altitude corrections, (3) obtaining meridian angle and declination, (4) azimuth, (5) amplitude, (6) time of meridian passage, (7) latitude by meridian altitude, (8) lines of position of H.O. 214, (9) obtaining meridian angle and declination, (10) fix by planet, star or moon, (11) latitude and compass error by Polaris, (12) latitude by meridian transit of lower branch, (13) star and planet identification, (14) sunrise/sunset and moonrise/moonset. Each chapter provides a clear and concise explanation of the fundamentals involved in arriving at the correct solution to these practical navigation requirements. In addition sample problems and answers are provided at the end of each chapter. Additional recommended reading is also listed for each chapter to be used in conjunction with the manual. The recommended reading has been thoughtfully limited to Dutton's Navigation and Piloting and Bowditch's American Practical Navigator, both of which provide more extensive and detailed explanations of the material covered by each chapter.
