OPTIMUM DESIGN OF COLUMNS USING AI TECHNIQUES

The development of a computer algorithm using AI techniques aimed at the intelligent design of columns is described. Following a general introduction, the theoretical model on which the program is based is outlined in the form of a tree structure. An optimisation procedure developed, aimed at establishing appropriate ratios of the basic column dimensions and using a minimum weight criterion, is then discussed. Finally a detailed description of the Lisp computer program is made and recommendations for future research efforts are given.
