AN EXAMPLE OF HULL FORM IMPROVEMENT OF CARGO/PASSENGER FERRYBOAT IN COMMISSION
Ohshima Unyu Co. Ltd. of Kagoshima, asked IHI (Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Ltd.) to increase the service speed of a cargo/passenger ferry on regular service between Okinawa and Tokyo by about one knot. Several possibilities were examined. An improvement in the bow geometry and a 5% increase in the normal output of the main engine was the solution adopted. Measures found to be inappropriate were the fitting of a wake-equalising duct or a stern bulb. The remodelled ship was delivered in June 1988.
