THE APPLICATION OF A COMMERCIAL COMPUTER AIDED DRAWING PACKAGE IN A NAVAL SHIP DESIGN SYSTEM

The Canadian Department of National Defence (DND) is currently undertaking a project to integrate its ship design and analysis software into a unified system which will share and transport data between programs. This project, entitled Project DISC (Design Integration for Ship Concepts), will encompass the major areas of early stage naval ship design and analysis. A commercial computer aided drawing (CAD) package will be incorporated to provide several capabilities which are absent in the existing software. Commercial CAD packages are relatively inexpensive, as compared to custom software for complex geometric manipulation, because of their large market distribution. They are also more flexible when adding or changing applications. Many applications that take advantage of the unique capabilities of a CAD package will be implemented in the DISC system. This paper will discuss these applications, in conjunction with the software and hardware interface requirements for an effective system.
