AN EFFECTIVE STABILITY ASSESSMENT PROCEDURE FOR SEMISUBMERSIBLES INCORPORATING THE EFFECTS OF WIND, WAVES AND VESSEL MOTIONS
This paper outlines the coordinated research undertaken at the University of Strathclyde on the performance and stability of semisubmersibles, and explains the rationale behind the development of an effective stability assessment procedure for intact and damaged semisubmersibles, leading to the proposal of practical stability criteria. The procedure is based on an energy balance approach and incorporates the effects of wind, waves and vessel motions. Application of the developed procedure to representative semisubmersible designs confirms its practical applicability, at the same time highlighting deficiencies in the existing stability assessment procedures.
