ON THE MATHEMATICAL DESCRIPTION OF SHIP MANOEUVRING

To judge the controllability of a ship steered by a man, the entire system, consisting of the ship, its steering device and the man, has to be regarded. Because of the presence of the human element in the system, manoeuvring experiments have to be done on real time scale as the human behaviour cannot be scaled down. Apart from experiments on real ships, another possibility is to perform manoeuvring experiments on real time scale on a manoeuvring simulator as installed at the N.S.M.B. In this simulator the real time scale response of the ship on commands from the wheelhouse is calculated by a computer and made visible by projection on a circular screen around the wheelhouse. Up to now the movements of a ship on real time in the horizontal plane are most accurately described by the Newtonian equations. The forces and moment acting on the ship are derived from tests with a model of the ship to be simulated. With a model matching method the unknown coefficients in the mathematical model are determined. During the model matching the simulated ship behaviour is compared with results of turning circle tests with the ship model. The resulting characteristics are programmed on a hybrid computer. The computer gets its commands from the wheelhouse of the manoeuvring simulator. The computed movements of the ship are, through a projection system, displayed on the circular screen.
