COMMISSIONING LARGE SHIPREPAIR YARDS
The paper is divided into two parts. The first describes guidelines and principles which apply in general to starting up repair yards. The second gives experiences of commissioning a very large shiprepair yard in the Middle East, its first year in operation and a comparison of results versus targets. The paper highlights two situations which can be faced when commissioning: i) when the startup is technically and commercially integrated with the construction of the yard, and operations start before construction is complete; and ii) when the startup, both technical and commercial, is begun after the yard has been completed and equipped. Some of the advantages and disadvantages of both situations are given.
