MAERSK NORTH ATLANTIC SERVICE BEGINS AS FIRST VESSEL IS DELIVERED

The maiden voyage of the new A P Moller containership, MARCHEN MAERSK commenced last week with the inauguration of Maersk Line's new North American service. The new vessel, is the first of nine sisterships building at the Odense Staalskibsvaerft A/S at Odense in Denmark and is credited with a service speed of 24 knots. Main propulsion is by the latest fuel-saving MAN B&W diesels generating 53,000bhp and linked to two power recovery gas turbines. Container capacity is given at 3,900TEU with 500 reefer slots giving the operator one of the highest capacities on the new trade. Principal particulars are: length oa 294.3m; breadth 32.22m; depth 21.5m; design draught 12.2m; gross tonnage 52,191; net tonnage 25,487.
