UPGRADING THE ICE-PENETRATION OF ICEBREAKER MUDYUG
The modification of the bow was based on model experiments in ice and in ice-free water and compared with known model data for this icebreaker prior to modification. New side and centre cutting blades cutting to a depth of 300mm were fitted; the lifting of ice, bending and breaking transversely and diametrically is carried out simultaneously. Broken ice is crushed by the flat part of the bow-sheathing and pushed under the edge of the channel by an apron. The friction of the sides of the ship with the edges of the channel is minimal. The ice-penetration was improved at least 1.6 times on previous performance at the same level of power-output.
