WAVE EXCITATION AND STRUCTURAL RESPONSE

To obtain an idea of the effect of waves in the high frequency tail of the wave spectrum one has to consider the natural frequencies of the structure with regard to these wave frequencies. Due to the large amplification at the lowest natural frequencies, high frequency waves can generate large vibrational deformations and, consequently, high dynamic stresses. In the deriviation of the complex frequency response of a drilling platform the finite element method is the obvious and most straight to the point means.
