LIQUID CHEMICALS (SEABORNE TRADE AND TRANSPORT)

This report is concerned with the seaborne trade and transport of bulk liquid chemicals and associated products. Its principal objective is to review the current and future prospects for chemical tankers which regularly participate in deep-sea trades. However, it is important for the reader to understand that chemical tankers move products other than chemicals. Indeed, the carriage of vegetable and animal oils and fats, and some white oil products provides very valuable employment for the modern day operator. Hence the report also includes information on vegetable/animal oils and facts and some while oil cargoes. All of these trades are notoriously difficult to analyse, and the chemical shipping industry, in particular, is renowned for its secrecy. Certainly, given the complexity of trading patterns in areas such as North Western Europe it is impossible to obtain any accurate details on short-sea movements, and for this reason the trade analysis shown in this report concentrates on deep-sea business only. The format of the report follows the pattern of other publications in the "Seaborne Trade and Transport" series, except for a couple of minor modifications. Is begins by looking at the structure of the petrochemical, inorganic chemical and vegetable/animal oil industries, and then moves to analyse seaborne trade in each of these groups. This is followed by an appraisal of the current shipping market (freight rates, available fleet, etc.). Lastly, the report considers the prospects for trade and shipping in bulk chemicals and associated products through to 1991.
