THE SINGLE ANCHOR LEG MOORING FOR TANKERS

During the last five years, Esso Research and Engineering (ERE) has conducted a number of model test programs at the Netherlands Ship Model Basin with the purpose of developing an improved single point mooring (SPM) for tankers. From these tests and other development work has come the Single Anchor Leg Mooring (SALM). This new mooring system incorporates novel arrangements of anchoring the mooring buoy and of connecting the floating hose with the submarine pipeline. The first SALM was installed at Marsa el Brega, Libya in late 1969, and a second SALM has just been installed at Okinawa.
