DEVIATED WELL VSP'S IN HIGH-DIP STRUCTURES

Vertical seismic profiles were acquired in two offshore wells, using a three component borehole seismic tool. Since the geological structure consists of steeply dipping formations, a considerable amount of shear wave energy was recorded. Three component processing was used to separate the shear waves. In addition the wells are severely deviated. Therefore a non-conventional, rotated coordinate system was defined to describe the velocity structure model used in the Kitchhoff migration of the VSP's. They provide fair to excellent ties at the wells for the complex, steeply dipping geology, as seen in the three dimensional surface seismic data. A standard method has been developed to provide fast, optimal processing of similar future VSP's from the area. Thus, additional high resolution seismic data, tied at the borehole, can be provided in time to be of use during planning of future drilling, or side-tracking, in exploration and development wells.
